King of the Reef
His Majesty, the Zeus Faber, graces us with his presence 👑
‘Zeus’ refers to the Greek father of the gods and is intended to highlight the fish’s distinctive appearance, whilst ‘faber’ means ‘smith’ and alludes to the animal’s striking, bony head shape.
It mainly uses the distinctive spot on its side to distract predators.
However, in many languages this is linked to legends (e.g. ‘St Peter’s fingerprint’), and thus gives the fish its name in many languages:
- German: Petersfisch or Heringskönig
- English: John Dory
- Spanish: Pez de San Pedro
The ‘King of the Reef’ is an absolute must-have on divers’ shirts 🎉
